The Dangers of Drinking Soy Milk: What You Need to Know
Soy milk made from soybeans or also known as tofu is a popular beverage. However, it can be very dangerous when making and consuming soy milk if you make these mistakes:
Insufficient soaking of soybeans
Many people who make soy milk do not soak the beans, thinking that it would retain the nutrients. This is because soybeans, like many other legumes, contain enzyme inhibitors that prevent them from germinating early. When soaked in water, these inhibitors are released and the beans can sprout. If soybeans are not soaked before processing, these compounds will inhibit nutrient absorption in the body. Therefore, soybeans should be soaked for 6-7 hours before grinding.
Inadequately cooked soy milk
Soybeans that are not thoroughly cooked still contain saponins, which are harmful to the body, and trypsin inhibitors. These substances not only irritate the digestive tract, causing nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and other symptoms, but also affect the normal digestion of protein in the body.
Many people think that heating the soy milk is sufficient to drink. However, you need to boil it at 100 degrees Celsius for the toxic compounds in soybeans to be destroyed.
Drinking too much soy milk, replacing water
Soy milk is rich in protein and nutrients, but it should not be used as a substitute for plain water as it puts a strain on the kidneys. Moreover, consuming too much soy milk can cause bloating and indigestion. It is advisable to drink it in moderation and combine it with other foods.
Drinking soy milk on an empty stomach for breakfast
Drinking soy milk on an empty stomach will convert the protein into calories. Therefore, it is best to consume soy milk together with starchy foods (bread, buns, etc.). You should eat something before drinking soy milk. When consumed with starchy foods, protein is better absorbed and not wasted. Nutritionist Ly Van Binh suggests combining soy milk with whole grain foods such as sweet potatoes, cereals, and cereal buns to supplement missing amino acids and ensure sufficient protein intake.
Drinking soy milk with antibiotics
Antibiotics can degrade the protein in soybeans. Therefore, it is not advisable to drink soy milk while taking antibiotics.
Drinking soy milk with eggs
The combination of soy milk and eggs can cause a poorly digested precipitate in the digestive system. Therefore, you should avoid eating eggs while drinking soy milk.
